SSG Travis Mills coined the term “recalibrated veteran” after he lost portions of all of his limbs in an IED explosion while serving our country in Afghanistan. He was injured and healed; he didn’t want to be called a “wounded warrior” – his wounds had healed. Instead, he referred to himself as recalibrated. He adjusted to his new normal; he recalibrated.

The Travis Mills Foundation offers seven distinct programs, free to veterans and their families. Each program has been carefully crafted to meet the needs of every veteran, no matter where you are in your life. We understand that rehabilitation is ongoing, and our foundation is committed to supporting veterans and their families every step of the way. As you navigate this process, we will meet your needs every step of the way. It’s a privilege to offer these transformative opportunities that empower veterans and their families.
The HHERO Program
Among our programs, our most popular is the HHERO program, tailored for recalibrated veterans and their spouses, partners, children, or a chosen guest. If you are in Ashland, OH, take a trip up the coast to the Belgrade Lakes region in Maine for a well-deserved retreat. Our family programs run throughout the year and feature activities such as kayaking, zoo visits, wheelchair basketball, archery, dog sledding, snowshoeing, and more.
Warrior PATHH
Warrior PATHH is the first program in the country created to encourage Post-Traumatic Growth in combat veterans and first responders. It supports these injured warriors in turning their struggles into significant strength and development. The program starts with a 7-day on-site initiation at the Travis Mills Foundation, then continues with 90 days of training provided by PATHH guides—those who have completed the program and are further along in their journey.
The Recalibrate Program
The Recalibrate Program extends the Travis Mills Foundation’s mission beyond the physical walls of the retreat and its programming. When recalibrated service members and their families attend the retreat, they experience a barrier-free environment and adaptive activities they may not otherwise encounter. When families return home, these barriers return and are not always mitigated. This program is designed to address physical, social, and financial barriers recalibrated service members may face outside the retreat.
